2020 MLB Draft
Once the pandemic took effect and sports were put on hold, the Angels’ content strategy shifted. A small issue in the grand scheme of things, but we weren’t prepared for weeks and months of no live games. We relied on replays (and highlights and documentaries of the replays). It wasn’t until the 2020 MLB Draft in July that we were gifted with the chance to capitalize on some semblance of live, unpredictable sports. We identified this early and used it two-fold: a way to showcase our current players’ draft story and to introduce these newly-drafted players to our fans and hype them up a bit. Video was the primary vehicle for storytelling here with graphics used as real-time as possible when picks were announced.
After circling up with our baseball operations team to see which players we should ideally highlight, I divvied up responsibilities amongst the group — pulling clips, finding music, motion graphics, static graphics, editing, effects. An unfortunate and unforeseen development was the notice of furloughs amongst the organization including the content team. Despite the news, the team grinded through their videos and assignments. Extremely proud of how the team pulled together during great adversity to showcase their talents.
The result were a series of five videos created by the team and two that I created (below, Keynan Middleton and Reid Detmers) highlighting current and newly-drafted players.
